Day Sixty-Seven: 12/12/2022
When no one is looking, these kids act like buffoons. It wouldn’t bother me, but it’s always in my hallway, and I’m not the hall monitor. I want them to enjoy themselves. Yet, my hallway deserves respect. Once cleaned, I find it incredibly insulting when they make a mess. Well, security and the administration has actively assisted in coordinating the kids out of the hallways, away from their shenanigans.
There was a very sweet moment. A young man approached me and complimented my sheer existence. I quote, “I really appreciate everything you do.” I mean, THANK YOU! So many days I feel disrespected and flat out annoyed by the unnecessary messes left by ungrateful brats. Then, you are touched by sincere kindness. I can’t believe that I felt so validated by a thirteen year old. At least I think he was that age. Perhaps, I should make him a character in The Teal Fairy Goes Back to School? What should his name be?
Day Sixty-Eight: 12/13/2022
It was quite cold today. I wasn’t mad that it didn’t snow. Gladys, my 1966 bike, does not like the snow. She can handle a lot, but when there is fresh powder she gets stuck, slips, and slides. It isn’t fun for me! Neither for her. My dear friend is my ride, my companion that continuously delivers me to my desired destinations. Her stainless steel becomes frigid and cranky when the temps are below a comfortable forty-five degrees.
Before work, I had to bike all morning in very cold temperatures. Gladys and my legs were very happy to be at work. At least we didn’t have to fight uphills and a breeze.
The event that was scheduled for the night was canceled. I’m not sure why, but it meant that my evening would be free of far less foot traffic.
Day Sixty-Nine: 12/14/2022
Last concert of the calendar year and the last day with students for the semester. I won’t have to deal with any insolent child or student until 2023. I’m perfectly fine with that. I’m not saying that I dislike children. I like them fine, they are necessary for the future. Without them, humanity dries up. The species will no longer exist. That doesn’t mean that I like having to pick up after them, unnecessarily.
I might be a little bitter because of the buffoonery bestowed unto me after Halloween. I want them to take a break, enjoy themselves, treat their soul’s desire, and come back more kind. More considerate to those that have to clean up after them. I’m only asking for a small amount of decency.
Day Seventy: 12/15/2022
I was very embarrassed with my attire today. I assumed that there were only going to be a few students in the building. I really thought that it was going to be a no people day. AGAIN! I was so wrong. There was the final orchestra concert. I wore gray sweatpants and a smelly workout shirt today! I still did a simple updo and painted my face, but still!
I understand that my overalls aren’t the most glamorous item, but it has become part of my uniform. I feel like it ties everything all together. What I was wearing tonight was intended for intense cleaning, not to be spotted by parents. I can do better. I’ve done better. Ugh! That won’t happen again. That’s for sure.
There are so many days that I wish I could dress up more, but I’ve found that my duties make it somewhat uncomfortable to wear anything other than the overalls. I suppose the most basic is still the most functional.
Day Seventy-One: 12/16/2022
My obsessive compulsive disorder, or should I say CDO, really does help me with the job. When there aren’t any students we get to properly clean the area. I mop, dust, and wipe areas that don't get the detailed treatment on a weekly basis. I really enjoy this process, but unfortunately it was interrupted multiple times by others. I know I shouldn’t become so annoyed when my duties are disturbed, but that’s how I work. I zone out and I hyper focus on cleaning as much as I can. However, today is Friday and my motivation was lacking just a tad. I did finish all my work while simultaneously performing a photoshoot. I hope you enjoy it and I hope my social media enjoys it. I never get to have such fabulous natural lighting with no one in the building.
